5 Simple Feng Shui Tips for a Quick Bedroom Makeover After Divorce or Breakup

Are you looking to bring some good Feng Shui vibes into your home? Do you feel like you need to make some changes in your life, and home but it all just seems too daunting? The beauty of Feng Shui is that small, significant changes can lead to big energy shifts. I always tell people who are just starting out with Feng Shui to keep it simple, and start small. One of the best places to start making Feng Shui changes is your bedroom – a manageable space that also happens to be your own personal sanctuary.

The bedroom is the most personal and intimate space in the home. People spend the bulk of their time in the bedroom sleeping, reading, getting ready for work, and of course romancing! Your bedroom is a great place to start a Feng Shui makeover. Here are five simple tips you can use in your bedroom to bring positive energy, relaxation, and maybe a little more romance.

  • Space planning for equality: If you want to have equal footing in a romantic relationship you have keep it even-steven when it comes to space and furniture. Whether you share your bed with a partner or you are hoping to meet that special someone make sure you keep both sides of the bed equal. Add matching tables and lamps and there should be equal access of both sides of the bed. Take a look at your headboard or bedframe. Extra tip: Do you have a headboard? Is it solid and secure? No wiggly bedposts please! You need a good, solid headboard to feel protected and safe.


  • Clear out the clutter: To get the chi moving keep your room open and spacious. Remove clutter, junk and extra furniture, this creates energy blocks and slows down chi (energy). Slow moving chi can lead to low productivity and lethargy. And we all no low energy equals low romance! Extra tip: too many pieces of big, heavy furniture can also block energy. Check to see if any pieces are blocking the entrance into your bedroom. You want to make sure there is a clear path into your room.


  • Add some fire: Looking to add a little spice in your life? Try adding some fire. The fire element, one of the five types of elemental energy, brings in faster moving chi. It is the type of energy that sparks, ignites passion and romance. Try lighting some candles, and adding some red or orange accessories.  Accessorizing is an easy and flexible way to bring an element into the space. You can choose how much or little you would like to add: a toss pillow, a rug or piece of art.  Art with a little red in it is great, but make sure the art is uplifting and positive. Extra tip: try to add things in pairs like two candles or painting with two flowers. The concept of the pair is symbolic of you and your current (or future) partner.


  • Mirror, mirror: If you have trouble sleeping take a look around your room. Is there a mirror in the room? Is it facing the bed? Mirrors can add the water element which is all about flow and movement which can disrupt your sleep. Try removing the mirrors if that isn’t possible cover them with a price of fabric for a few days and see how you sleep. Extra tip: Mirrors can be quite useful.  They are an easy Feng Shui cure to expand and open up the energy of a room. You can use decorative mirrors in tight, narrow hallways to give the chi some breathing room, but if you are restless sleeper try to avoid them in the bedroom.


  • Keep the EMFs out: (EMGs = electromagnetic fields) Many of us use our bedrooms as a multi-purpose room, creating a bedroom-office-exercise space. If you have the space in your home and you can have the luxury of a dedicated office, that is always best (same goes for exercise), but sometimes this isn’t possible. If you need a computer in your room make sure you turn it off at night while you are sleeping. Same goes for televisions, cell phones, or radios, if at all possible remove them from the bedroom, or at the very least turn them off when you are not using them.


These five simple Feng Shui tips will help you to create a more relaxing and energetic space. Extra tip: before you get started, give some thought to how you want your bedroom to make you feel and incorporate that into all your decorating elements.  Start your design with an inspiration piece that you can build your concept around. Fabrics, artwork and rugs are great ways to get inspired, and these pieces can become the creative anchors for your overall design. Decorating your room with a clear vision in mind will help you to find the right furniture, fabric, colours and accessories so your bedroom is your own personal sanctuary.
