Are You Supportive Enough?

Are You Supportive Enough?

There are some situations and experiences in life that can be more difficult and trying than others. Every person has

experienced loss in some form from a tough breakup or divorce to even losing a close friend or loved one. When someone is going through something like this they need your support to pull them through. You need to be the strength that they can rely on and someone that they can go to when they are feeling broken down or weak. Being a pillar of support is not always easy, but it all starts with showing a little compassion. You should try to put yourself in the other person’s shoes and think about what you would need if you are dealing with a breakup of divorce. If you know someone that needs support, it is time that you learned how to be there for them.

Here are a few of the best ways that you can show your support:

Be There

One of the best ways that you can be supportive is by simply being accessible. This means that you need to be around and be available. Giving your time is something that means more than anything else. You do not even have to offer any real words of wisdom as long as you are there to listen. If you are available and dependable, you are showing the support that is needed.

Trust

Another key to showing support is keeping your word. This means that when you make a promise or give your word, you need to be sure that you are sticking to it. This person is dealing with loss and they do not need to deal with you breaking your trust. If something is told to you in confidence, you need to be sure that you do not repeat it to anyone else. It is something that is only supposed to be shared between the two of you. Showing support involves being someone that can be relied upon and being someone that will not break confidence.

Honesty

Just because you are trying to be there for them does not mean that you always have to tell them exactly what they want to hear. More than anything, you need to be honest and give them advice that is helpful and designed to help them to move forward. You need to be their for them, but they also need your honesty to help pull them through.
